'Come heavy sleep' 2014
4 x 4 x 2 metres. suspended hand cut paper. Theatre lights.
The Long Gallery, Mottisfont, National Trust, Hampshire 'Cutting Edge' Exhibition.
The large scale fragile papercut was meticulously cut by hand for the Long Gallery at Mottisfont. The gallery windows were blacked out, the only light being from spotlights positioned on the floor. As a result the piece was dramatically lit, appearing to exist in a void, both magical, uncanny and dream like.
The central motifs are inspired by the winter garden, as well as the surrounding river Test which winds its way through Mottisfont. The house being ‘put to sleep’, its history, as well as the passing of the year are references. ‘Come, heavy sleep’ aimed to stimulate meditation and reflection while capturing the magic, mystery and essence of winter at this special time of year.
