‘Borrowed Light’ was produced in response to a residency with the National Trust at Mottisfont, for a year October 2017 - 2018. Her objective was less about portraying a literal representation of a place but rather an attempt to convey feelings surrounding ephemerality and the role of the custodian, using the form of a book as a repository or container. Requiring both touch and time as a process and language, it can enable new readings of a site.
‘Borrowed Light’ was made at Oakley Beat, a famous fishing beat on Mottisfont Estate. Using camera-less, historical photographic processes, light-sensitive papers were hand coated with cyanotype and then placed on site using local plants and left for long periods of time. Being exposed to the spontaneous elements of chance, weather and light, resulted in each print becoming a unique record of time and place.
With its references to conservation practices, this book is also a durational and personal field study and involved recording a variety of conditions whilst on site.
The body of work produced as part of the residency was exhibited at Mottisfont, 'For the Time Being' Exhibition 03.05.19 - 07.07.19.
