Eileen White works with sustainable photographic materials and processes, responding to historical sites within a landscape to explore and make visible our entanglements to place, the non-human, time and our impact on Nature. In light of the current climate crisis, she takes time to create less anthropocentric work, using an ethical and caring framework, by researching alternative ways to think about her relationship with the Earth that are less environmentally destructive.
Using slow, repetitive, low-tech, analogue print and photographic processes, she interweaves an embodied methodology, often uncalibrated, such as homemade cameras and historical photographic techniques, which involve making her equipment or chemicals from waste items.
Eileen grows her own ‘photographic plants’ as well as converting food waste into less toxic alternative darkroom chemicals. These are degraded once used, to be reintroduced to plants as fertiliser and enable a reciprocal circular economy to exist, becoming a form of performative activism. This creates a different way of image-making that isn’t purely representational. Working this way enables her to gain a more grounded, intrinsic understanding of the landscape she observes and relies on a collaboration with materials and the wider biosphere. The resulting work aims to entice the viewer into another world; to create both a connection and a longing to know more, as well as new forms of attention, sensitivity and thought.
‘Foxglove’ is a unique photograph, using a hand-coated recycled glass slide and antique field camera. The paper print was developed onto consumer waste packaging using homemade compost chemistry. A bespoke framer has framed this item, which has been finished to an extremely high standard with a hanging mechanism on the back.
